Obituary for Jerry Gauzy

Jerome “Jerry” Gauzy, age 82, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri. Jerry was born on May 11, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Joseph and Bertha (Tayloe) Gauzy. He grew up in the Japan, Missouri area and worked on the family farm, which was the foundation of his strong work ethic. Jerry was united in marriage to Dorothy Thenhaus on September 1, 1956 at Holy Family Parish in Port Hutson. They would have celebrated 63 years of marriage. Jerry and Dorothy were blessed with four wonderful daughters: Kathy, Margie, Laura and Karen.

Jerry was a hard-working man of strong Christian faith. Jerry and Dorothy settled in Sullivan in 1964. After years of working for others as a heavy equipment operator, Jerry became self-employed and started his own business in 1979, Gauzy Excavating and Grading. Jerry was very proud of his business and spent many years of daily commutes into St. Louis to build subdivisions throughout the county. On the weekends, you could find him locally digging lakes or grading roads. After 26 years of business, Jerry made the decision to stop working in the dirt and start playing in it, and retired from his business in 2005. However, not one to be inactive, Jerry continued to work for others, as well as volunteer in the community, especially for his church. Jerry was a long-time, active member at St. Anthony Catholic Church and was very involved with the Knights of Columbus, attaining 4th Degree Knight. During Lent, one could find him every Friday working the fish fry.

Jerry loved automobiles and was a “Ford” man. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandkids and bird watching, especially purple martins and bluebirds. Building bluebird houses was one of his favorite hobbies. He found great joy in owning dogs, especially Cocker Spaniels and Shelties. Branson was a favorite get away for Jerry and Dorothy.

Jerry was a loving and compassionate husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and sharing his wisdom. Jerry will be greatly missed by his family, church family, and friends.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gauzy of Sullivan, MO; four daughters: Kathy Foshage and husband, Matt, of Fenton, MO, Margie Kase and husband, Jim, of Sullivan, MO, Laura Schromm and husband, Brian, of Ballwin, MO, and Karen Juergens and husband, Richard, of Sullivan, MO; nine grandchildren: Ryan Foshage, Kelsey Foshage, Kimberly Kase, Craig Kase, Eric Kase, Sarah Schromm, Aaron Schromm, Samantha (Juergens) Sheldon and husband, Ryan, and Kayla Riddle; four great-grandchildren: Logan Kase, Carter, Conor and Charlie Sheldon; one sister-in-law, Wanda Gauzy of Gerald, MO, nieces & nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bertha Gauzy; two brothers, James and Wilbert Gauzy; two sisters, Thelma Hornaday and Irene Dunne; and one sister-in-law, Eileen Gauzy.
