Obituary for Mike J. Ryan, Jr.

Michael J. Ryan, Jr., age 90, of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at Victorian Place of Cuba.

Michael Joseph Ryan, Jr. was born on December 14, 1928 in Ishpeming, Michigan, the son of Michael J. Ryan, Sr. and Mary (Nolan) Ryan. He grew up and graduated High School in Ishpeming. Mike honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mike was united in marriage to the love his life, Betty Conradson, on September 30, 1950. They were blessed with four children: Patricia, Mike III, Daniel and Thomas. Most of Mike’s working career was spent working in the mining industry. He worked in Grants, NM, and in 1964, moved his family to Sullivan, where he gained employed at Pea Ridge Mines. Mike worked at Pea Ridge for ten years before becoming a Federal Mine Inspector for the duration of his career. Mike was a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was also very active in his community and served as city Alderman for 22 years. Mike was also active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie 3781, where he once served as President and Vice President. Due to his many years of service at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mr. Ryan was inducted into the Eagle Hall of Fame.

This week we lost a very fun-loving friend. He had no problem getting up and belting out an Irish tune whenever the mood struck, he would throw out a limerick on any subject that would just send us rolling with laughter, and then just walk by the piano and start playing it. There was not a day that went by that he didn’t talk about the love of his life, Ms. Betty. He loved his church and said the rosary every day, if not twice. When he passed, he had that special rosary in his hand…somehow, I think he knew. He was truly an amazing gent and we all loved him dearly. He will be missed greatly by all of us here at Victorian Place Residential and Arbors.

Mike is survived by his four children: Patricia Harmon and husband, Paul Jr., Michael Ryan III, Daniel Ryan & significant other, Cindy Wischmeyer, and Thomas Ryan, all of Sullivan, MO; 13 grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ryan; grandson, Dustin Ryan; and four sisters: Frances Burdette, Patricia Bingham, Sarah Ganey-Pellow and Mary Wahlman.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted 10:00 AM, Monday, July 29, 2019 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan, with Father Paul Telken officiating. The Ryan family will receive friends from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM at St. Anthony. Mr. Ryan’s cremains will be placed next to his wife, Betty, in the St. Anthony Cemetery Columbarium in Sullivan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Sullivan Knights of Columbus or St. Anthony Catholic School in Sullivan.
