Obituary for Robert "Bob" Schatz, Sr.

To those who defend it, life has a meaning the protected will never know. Our dear friend Bob knew this meaning better than most.

Sergeant Major, USMC Retired, Robert W. Schatz left his Earthly bonds August 17, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born April 28, 1938 to a hardworking, rural farm family in Spring Bluff, his formative years gave him the mental and physical toughness to become a Marine. He served four tours in Vietnam and received the Navy Commendation Medal with “V” device for combat valor. He loved the Marine Corps and his Marines. After Vietnam, he was honored numerous times as a Drill Instructor and later a recruiter. He never missed an opportunity to talk with a fellow Marine who had a Marine Corps emblem on a car, a hat or T-shirt. He would even visit with widows if he saw a Marine Corps flag flying in front of a house. He departed the Marine Corps after 30 years of selfless service as the Battalion Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

Bob sacrificed for his country, God, and the Marine Corps, but his heart belonged to one woman. He and Patricia met in Torrance, CA, and married 60 years ago. After military service and living in multiple places, they returned to Sullivan to start a new chapter. Bob was known throughout town for his quick smile and always wearing his red Marine Corps ballcap. He dedicated his remaining years to help anyone in need. He could repair anything mechanical and loved building, to include the gazebo in town. Bob built Christian youth camps and made annual trips to maintain them in Wyoming. He was a permanent fixture at the Fitness Center as few could believe how much energy “that old Marine” had! Even as he advanced in years and joined the morning coffee crew, Bob never missed a day at the Center to work out and inspire others. He especially enjoyed time with his family and making his grandchildren laugh. There was no "finer time" than having a grandchild on his lap driving a tractor. He was also known to enjoy driving the homecoming court in his Model T in parades.

As a husband, a father, and a friend, his love and spirit endure in Patricia and their three children, five grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. On their behalf, they wish to express their sincerest gratitude to friends, neighbors and family for their thoughts, prayers, kind memories, and support during this time of our patriarch's passing.

Bob is survived by his wife, Patricia Schatz of Sullivan, MO; three children: Pamela Baker of San Diego, CA, Robert Schatz, Jr. of Sullivan, MO, and Michelle Lunsfordhodson and husband, Shawn, of Florida; five grandchildren: Joshua Baker and wife, Amy, of San Diego, CA, Ryan Schatz and wife, Jessica, of Sullivan, MO, Jesse Baker and wife, Kelly, of San Diego, CA, Cyle Lunsfordhodson and wife, Vanessa, of North Carolina, and Brandon Lunsfordhodson of Florida; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Agnes Price and husband, Harlan, of Sullivan, MO, Virginia Blankenship and husband, DeWayne, of St. Louis, MO, Marie Spencer of Jacksonville, FL, and Mary Schafer and husband, Wayne, of Sullivan, MO; two brothers, Ed Schatz of Texas, and George “Les” Schatz and wife, Leola, of Sullivan, MO; nieces & nephews, other relatives and friends.
