Obituary for Sam Rhoades

Sammie V. “Sam” Rhoades, age 77, of Dexter, MO, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019 at Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter, MO.

Sam was born on May 30, 1942 in Solgohachia, Arkansas, the son of Carl and Henrietta (Ledbetter) Rhoades. He grew up and attended school in a one room schoolhouse. He began helping on the family farm at a young age. Sam and his family eventually moved to St. Louis. He took a strong interest in music and eventually started his own band, “Sonny Rhoades and the Roadrunners”. Sam was united in marriage to Brenda Kay Ball on June 6, 1972 and they were blessed with seven children: Meredith, Pam, Samantha, Rachel, Johnny. Gary and Melinda. They raised their family in various places. Sam worked primarily as a commercial truck driver, although he worked many different jobs through the years. Sam and Brenda retired to Birdtown, AR, in 2005, and it wasn’t until 2018 that they moved to Dexter, MO. Music was Sam’s passion. He also enjoyed wrestling as a hobby, loved motorcycles, fishing and family cookouts. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family and friends.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Brenda Kay Rhoades of Dexter, MO; seven children: Meredith Blankenship and husband, Jandy, of Tacoma, WA, Pam Meadows of Whitefish, MT, Samantha Young and husband, Curtis, of St. Louis, MO, Rachel Rhoades of Dexter, MO, Johnny Rhoades and wife, Michelle, of Center Ridge, AR, Gary Rhoades of Dexter, MO, and Melinda Rhoades and fiancé, Kenny York, of Conway, AR; four sisters: Wilma Jennings of Bourbon, MO, Sue Lupo of Sullivan, MO, Brenda Wadlow of Arkansas, and Tammy Wedemeier and husband, Fred, of St. Clair, MO; three brothers: Larry Rhoades and wife, Colleen, of Sullivan, MO, Ricky Rhoades and wife, Tonya, of Sullivan, MO, and Jeff Rhoades of Arkansas; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Henrietta Rhoades; and two brothers, William and Carroll Rhoades.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 PM, Monday, September 23, 2019 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Graveside Services will follow in Delhi Cemetery, Cuba, MO, with military honors.
