Obituary for Sherwood L. Mattox

Sherwood Lindbergh Mattox of Bourbon, Missouri, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019 at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 1 day.

Sherwood was born on January 13, 1928 at Anthonies Mill, Missouri, to the late Thomas Earl and Effie Catherine (Harmon) Mattox. He was the youngest of five children. In 1950, he moved to St. Louis to seek employment. Sherwood met the love of his life, Sarah Armstrong, at a boarding house that his sister ran. They were married on September 1, 1950 and began their life on the family farm near Anthonies Mill, and later moved to Bourbon. To their union, three children were born: Kathy, Joe and Tammy. Sherwood and Sarah enjoyed 65 years of marriage, until Sarah passed away in May of 2016.

Sherwood was a hard worker, always concerned about providing for his family. He was a mechanic, farmer, and a jack of all trades. “Grandpa could fix anything” but it was going to be fixed with metal. He worked most of his pre-retirement life for MoDOT as a Field Mechanic. He also sold used automobiles, farm equipment, and in the evenings and on weekends, he would work on tractor trucks, crawlers and most anything that needed repaired. After retirements, he started cattle farming. He loved to be out on his farm. Sherwood was a man who always spoke his mind. He would frequently follow something he said with “it just had to be said” or “don’t forget your kids”, “shut the damn door” or how about “I’ll be damned.” He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all of us.

Sherwood is survived by his three children: Kathy Mantle and husband, Leroy, of Bourbon, MO, Joe Mattox and wife, Cynthia, of Bourbon, MO, and Tammy Brock and husband, Willie, of St. Clair, MO; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah; his parents, Earl and Effie; and all four of his siblings: Leola Miller, Wayne Mattox, Louise Johnson, and Helen Neff.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Following visitation, private graveside services will be conducted by Bill Harrison at the Harmon Family Cemetery near Anthonies Mill.
